About us
ADDHU - Association for the Defense of Human Rights - is an International NGO, accredited by the Portuguese Institute for Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who sprung from the will to fight for the liberation of Burma and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. After having visited this country in 1997, its founder and president, the writer and university teacher Laura Vasconcellos, was firmly determined upon her return home to fulfill the demands she received during her visit to “be our voice outside”. She wrote a book based on her personal experience, published in 2005 by Guimarães Editores, “Do Outro lado do Mundo – Cartas da Birmânia”.
From the publication of this book onwards, she has developed her activity on behalf of Human Rights in Burma: she collected signatures for a letter addressed to Burma’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, on a first stage, and later to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, M. Kofi Annan; she was interviewed for the Portuguese television stations RTPN and TVI, where she was able to talk about the social and political situation of that country and the urgent need of action to be taken on behalf of the people of Burma; she was also interviewed for the newspaper Jornal de Letras. In July 2006, she was invited by the organizers of the Second Forum on Human Rights in Nantes, France to participate in this forum; but working in close contact with the people on the streets, passing on information and creating a sense of responsibility and awareness regarding the situation of the people of Burma and the Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi have been the central actions of the founder of and president of ADDHU, who hopes to further develop these activities in other countries of Asia and the rest of the world.

ADDHU’s mission is to conceive, implement, execute and support projects and programs of information, education, awareness and development, made to promote the liberties and the protection of the citizen’s rights, in the full respect for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In order to achieve its main goals, ADDHU will develop the following activities:

8. Divulgation of the reality in developing countries, and awareness of the civil society to the need of a most committed relationship with these countries.
9. Information and call to actions that have as main goal the resolution of humanitarian problems and human rights violations, as well as the divulgation of the existing means of solving these situations.
10. Information and education of young people, awaking them to the social actions for development, peace and importance of non-violence strategies as an alternative to armed conflict.
